Succulents are slowly taking over gardening and plant-keeping. However, a lot of people get the wrong idea that succulents are just the normal miniature cacti. This is really not true. As a matter of fact, succulents are very diverse and if you are thinking of growing one for your own, you will realize that identifying the variants of succulents is a very complicated thing. The varieties range from its colors like white to red, purple, yellow, orange, stripes, and green.

Cacti are just one variant of succulents that grow in deserts. Other succulent types are found in seaside cliffs while some are found in limbs of jungle trees. An interesting fact is that most succulents can survive harsh high temperature but they are not that tolerating with hard freezes and temperature below zero.

Succulents are also classified with its ability to grow individually or in colonies. Some succulents are tall while some are so small. Some are plump while some are thin. There are even succulents that are edible! Under each type, there are often more specific varieties.

For starters, here’s a small list of succulents you can look for. They are very easy to grow and you can find a lot of resources about how to take care of them.

  • Aeonium – while its name means “immortal” in Latin, it’s a desert pinwheel that is frost sensitive so you need to be careful about where you put them.
  • Agave – it’s a century plant that has a large tolerance to freezing temperature of up to -10F.
  • Sedum – this is the variety that can survive up to -20F temperature and if you decide to keep the small kind, be sure to not expose them in hot climates too much.
